UTM Zone Finder: What UTM Zone Am I In?
The XRTech UTM Zone Finder by XRTech Group shows the UTM zone of any place on Earth. Search a city or address, use your location, enter latitude and longitude, or click the map. You get the zone number, latitude band, hemisphere, EPSG code, central meridian and UTM easting and northing in one click.
Quick answer: Your UTM zone is floor((longitude + 180) / 6) + 1, with N for the northern hemisphere and S for the southern. For example, London is in UTM zone 30U (30N, EPSG:32630), New York City is in 18T (18N, EPSG:32618), Mumbai is in 43Q (43N, EPSG:32643) and Sydney is in 56H (56S, EPSG:32756).
Search a place, tap Near me, or click anywhere on the map to see its UTM zone.
How to Find Your UTM Zone
A UTM zone is one of 60 north to south strips, each 6 degrees of longitude wide, that the Universal Transverse Mercator system uses to turn latitude and longitude into flat metre coordinates. To learn how the grid, false easting and datums work, read our full guide to the UTM coordinate system. To find your zone, follow these steps.
- Type a city, address or place name in the search box, or paste latitude and longitude such as 30.2672, -97.7431.
- Or tap Near me to use your device location, or click any point on the satellite map.
- Read the UTM zone, latitude band, hemisphere, EPSG code, central meridian, easting and northing in the results panel.
- Copy one value or all of them, then use Draw project area to mark your site if you need satellite imagery for it.

How the UTM Zone Is Calculated
The zone number comes from longitude alone: zone = floor((longitude + 180) / 6) + 1. Zone 1 starts at 180 degrees west, and the numbers increase eastward to zone 60. Each zone has a central meridian at (zone × 6) minus 183 degrees, and coordinates in the zone are measured from that line with a false easting of 500,000 metres.
The hemisphere letter comes from latitude. Points north of the equator use N, and points south of it use S, where northings start at 10,000,000 metres at the equator. The latitude band letter splits each zone into 20 bands of 8 degrees, from C at 80 degrees south to X, which runs from 72 to 84 degrees north. The letters I and O are skipped.
Two areas break the regular pattern. Zone 32V is widened to 3 to 12 degrees east to cover southwest Norway. Near Svalbard, zones 31X, 33X, 35X and 37X are widened, and 32X, 34X and 36X are not used. The finder handles both cases.
UTM Zone EPSG Codes
GIS software such as QGIS and ArcGIS Pro identifies each UTM zone by an EPSG code. Replace zz with the two digit zone number.
| Datum | Hemisphere or region | EPSG pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| WGS84 | Northern hemisphere, zones 1 to 60 | 326zz | Zone 14N = EPSG:32614 |
| WGS84 | Southern hemisphere, zones 1 to 60 | 327zz | Zone 56S = EPSG:32756 |
| NAD83 | North America, zones 1 to 23 | 269zz | Zone 18N = EPSG:26918 |
| ETRS89 | Europe, zones 28 to 38 | 258zz | Zone 30N = EPSG:25830 |
| GDA2020 (MGA) | Australia, zones 46 to 59 | 78zz | Zone 56 = EPSG:7856 |

Frequently Asked Questions
What UTM zone am I in?
Open the XRTech UTM Zone Finder and tap Near me, or type your city or address in the search box. The tool shows your UTM zone number, latitude band, hemisphere and EPSG code straight away. You can also click any point on the map.
How do I find the UTM zone from latitude and longitude?
Use zone = floor((longitude + 180) / 6) + 1. Add N if the latitude is 0 or higher and S if it is below 0. For example, longitude -97.74 gives floor(82.26 / 6) + 1 = 14, so Austin is in zone 14N. Norway and Svalbard have special zones, and the finder applies them for you.
What is the difference between 14N and 14R?
Both describe the same zone 14. The N in 14N means the northern hemisphere and is what GIS software and EPSG codes use. The R in 14R is the latitude band letter, one of 20 bands of 8 degrees from C in the south to X in the north, used in MGRS and on many maps.
What is the EPSG code for my UTM zone?
On WGS84 the code is 32600 plus the zone number in the northern hemisphere and 32700 plus the zone number in the southern hemisphere. Zone 43N is EPSG:32643 and zone 56S is EPSG:32756. The finder also shows the NAD83, ETRS89 and GDA2020 codes where they apply.
What if my project area crosses two UTM zones?
Draw the area in the finder and it lists every zone it touches. Most teams pick the zone that holds the larger part of the site and work in that one projection, because distortion just outside a zone edge is still very small. For very wide areas, ask us and we can deliver imagery in the projection your project uses.
Why is Norway in zone 32V instead of 31V?
Zone 32V was widened to cover longitudes 3 to 12 degrees east between 56 and 64 degrees north, so all of southwest Norway, including Bergen, sits in one zone. Around Svalbard, only zones 31X, 33X, 35X and 37X are used. The finder applies both exceptions.
Does UTM work at the North and South Poles?
No. UTM covers latitudes from 80 degrees south to 84 degrees north. The polar areas use the Universal Polar Stereographic (UPS) system, and the finder tells you when a point falls outside the UTM range.
Is the XRTech UTM Zone Finder free?
Yes. The XRTech UTM Zone Finder by XRTech Group is free, needs no signup and works in any browser on desktop and mobile. Lookups run in your browser, and place names come from OpenStreetMap search.
